Complete remaining “Restaurant Relaunch” and façade program projects
Project Description
The Restaurant Relaunch and Facade Improvement programs are part of the City of Hayward's suite of COVID-19 economic recovery grant programs created to support the relaunch of local restaurants, create outdoor dining, and refurbish small business exteriors. These initiatives are designed to provide much-needed financial assistance to local businesses that have been adversely affected by the pandemic, helping them to not only survive but thrive in a post-pandemic economy. By investing in the physical enhancements of these businesses, the programs aim to revitalize the commercial landscape of Hayward, making it more attractive and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.
The Hayward Restaurant Relaunch program has provided reimbursement grants starting at $10,000 to make physical improvements such as establishing permanent outdoor dining areas, improving interior dining spaces, painting, awnings, signage, and other related improvements. These improvements are not only aesthetic but functional, enabling restaurants to operate more efficiently, provide a better dining experience for their customers, and give a safe dining option when indoor dining may be limited.
City staff have provided comprehensive support by connecting businesses with architects, offering design recommendations, and assisting with permitting and project management. This assistance streamlines the improvement process from initial design to final implementation, enabling businesses to focus on their operations while enhancements are made. This hands-on approach underscores the City’s commitment to supporting local businesses through every step of the recovery process.
Q4-FY24 Status Update (Updated Fiscal Year Quarterly):
The Restaurant Relaunch and Restore and Reopen Façade Improvement programs have made significant progress in the past fiscal year. To date, Economic Development has completed 37 out of 40 projects, achieving a 93% completion rate. These efforts are revitalizing our local business community by enhancing the visual appeal and functionality of our commercial areas.
The Hayward Restaurant Relaunch program has provided much-needed financial support to local restaurants, enabling them to establish permanent outdoor dining areas, improve interior dining spaces, and make other critical enhancements. Similarly, the Restore and Reopen Façade Improvement Program has helped businesses improve their exterior appearances, contributing to the overall beautification and economic recovery of our city.
In alignment with the City's equity goals, nearly all of the businesses assisted through these programs have been minority-owned.
