Design and Install Heritage Plaza Art Pieces to Honor Indigenous and Russell City Heritage

Project Description

This project is a significant cultural initiative within Heritage Plaza, a space dedicated to commemorating the diverse experiences and cultures that have shaped Hayward's rich history. This project will feature three distinctive art pieces that pay tribute to key communities and their contributions to the city's heritage. The new art pieces will honor the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, the Japanese-American community, and the residents of Russell City, which aim to educate and inspire residents and visitors alike.

One piece will celebrate the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, whose ancestors lived in the Hayward area long before colonization. Another will recognize the Japanese-American community, who were forcibly removed and bussed from the current Heritage Plaza location to incarceration camps during World War II. The third piece will commemorate Russell City, an unincorporated community that was declared blighted by the county and subsequently annexed by Hayward in the 1960s, leading to the displacement of its residents. Through these art installations, the project will honor and preserve the stories of these groups, ensuring their legacies are remembered and respected.
