# Hayward residents receiving Tuition Assistance Grants
Definition
FY 2024 Status Update (Updated Fiscal Year Annual):
The City of Hayward's Learn to Earn Tuition Assistance Program is a crucial element of our COVID-19 economic recovery efforts. This initiative provides grants to Hayward residents for pursuing degree programs or technical and professional training, aiming to equip them with the skills needed for targeted industries such as advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and other technical fields that offer higher wages and job stability.
To date, the Learn to Earn program has awarded over 260 grants, with the majority going to minority and low-income residents. These grants, which range from $500 to $2,000, have helped recipients cover tuition and related expenses at institutions like Chabot Community College, Cal State East Bay University, and Eden Area Regional Occupational Program (ROP). By investing in residents' education and skills, we aim to enhance their competitiveness in the job market, contributing to long-term prosperity and stability for both individuals and the local business community.
Our efforts have been focused on bridging educational access gaps, especially for groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education or have accepted lower-paying jobs requiring less skill. Over 90% of grant recipients were minorities, and 70% came from low-income households. This program is a testament to our commitment to fostering economic development and improving the quality of life for all Hayward residents.
The program also features an upcoming Workforce Development Job Fair at City Hall, 777 B St, on September 19, 2024, from 3 PM to 6 PM. We anticipate 300 to 500 attendees, including job seekers and local employers. This event will provide valuable networking opportunities and further support the connection between skilled residents and local businesses. Stay tuned for more details as we continue to support our community's recovery and growth.
