Tons of waste diverted from the landfill

Definition

This is the amount of waste diverted from landfill annually. The number is a percentage based on a formula the state (CalRecycle) uses. The formula is based on per capita amount of waste and then converted into a percentage. The percentage represents the amount of the total waste generated by Hayward that is recycled or beneficially used each year, rather than being sent to the landfill. The state requires each jurisdiction to divert at least 50% of the total waste it generates.
