Continue to identify opportunities for compost hubs and other distribution mechanisms for compost in Hayward
Project Description
Compost hubs are locations where compost is available free-of-charge to members of the public year-round. They are often sited at community gardens. Those who visit a hub can take as much compost as they like when the hub is open. The compost is usually in bulk form (in a pile) and residents fill their own buckets or bags with compost. This means of distributing compost can help the City meet SB1383 mandates and help promote sustainable gardening practices while offering a nice benefit to Hayward gardening enthusiasts. Turning food scraps and yard trimmings into compost and offering it to residents is a much more sustainable practice that landfilling food scraps and yard trimmings.

Q4-FY24 Status Update (Updated Fiscal Year Quarterly):
A potential compost hub site has been identified at the HARD community garden on Whitman Ave. The garden has undeveloped land on the Berry Ave. side of the site. City staff have visited the site with HARD and reviewed a basic compost hub plan with HARD. The garden seems like good location, but the site plan is in the process of being updated to depict changes needed to accommodate a bunker for compost and paving to allow a truck to deliver the compost, as well as gates and fencing. Upon completion of the updated site plan, Hayward's Planning department will need to approve the plan, and then the project may move forward. Currently working with HARD to update the site plan.
