Champion Climate Resilience & Environmental Justice

Council’s vision for Hayward’s future includes: “Hayward continues to be a leader in climate resilience and environmental justice, reducing its carbon footprint, improving its sustainable practices, increasing green spaces, and preparing residents to face the impacts of climate change.”

The City’s environmental programs are coordinated by the City’s Environmental Services Division in the Public Works & Utilities Department, which works with many departments to achieve sustainable practices across the organization. Council has three objectives for this priority, which are discussed at the Council Sustainability Committee. Committee meetings are bi-monthly and are open to the public.

Objectives

Reduce Greenhouse Gases and Dependency on Fossil Fuels
Hayward’s updated Climate Action Plan was adopted by the City Council in January of 2024. The City’s goal is to reduce Hayward’s greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent below 2005 baseline emissions levels by 2030.
Reduce waste by promoting a circular economy
The City’s Solid Waste team manages the City's contract with Waste Management of Alameda County and Tri-CED Recycling with the goal of minimizing the amount of trash that goes to the landfill.
Mitigate climate crisis impacts through resilient design and community engagement
The City adopted its first Environmental Justice Element in January of 2024 as part of the Hayward General Plan.
